Current fellows Nina Balandina, Jack Hatcher, Markella Lanara, and Grace Allread successfully hosted the first social event for graduate students made possible through funding from the Luther Rice Society Advisory Committee. The event, a Virtual Game Night, marked the official launch of the fellows’ GW Graduate Experience & Research Network Initiative, the proposal that earned them $11,500 earlier this year.
The Virtual Game Night was a resounding success, attracting participation from graduate students representing eight different GW schools. Attendees included both master’s and doctoral students from in-person and online programs, creating a lively and inclusive environment.
The evening began with introductions, during which participants shared their names, programs, and showed off their Halloween costumes. They then broke into small groups to play several rounds of Skribbl.io, an online version of Pictionary. Afterwards, everyone returned to the main room for a round of GW-themed Kahoot! Trivia, with cash prizes awarded to the top three finalists. An additional prize was raffled among participants who dressed up for the occasion. Following the games, many attendees stayed online to socialize and continue building connections.
Feedback from attendees reflected the event’s positive impact, with one student sharing:
“This event was honestly perfect. I hope to see more of these in the future because I had lots of fun and everyone was so nice and welcoming. As a first-semester online student, this really helped me feel more connected to campus since I can’t visit often. Can’t wait to attend more!”
This successful kickoff event underscores the fellows’ commitment to enhancing connection and belonging within the GW graduate community. Stay tuned for more updates as they continue to organize future events under this exciting initiative.
