Grace Mauser Attends, Presents at the 2018 Virginia Social Science Association Conference

On Saturday, April 21st, second-year Fellow Grace Mausser used an award from the Professional and Academic Development Fund to support her travel to Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia to present her economics thesis on the relationship between residential housing segregation and metropolitan employment levels at the 2018 Virginia Social Science Association Conference. The conference featured a variety of research from across the social science spectrum. Grace enjoyed interacting with the variety of scholars and learning about work happening around the mid-Atlantic. She also found Richmond to be lovely and highly recommends the city for a weekend trip!

More Research Is Needed: Reflection on GW Research Days - Alex Wang

On Tuesday, April 10th and Wednesday, April 11th hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students  presented their research to the GW community at GW Research Days. The event provides students with the opportunity to present their exciting findings, receive feedback from their peers and professors, and to win cash prizes along the way!

Second-year Fellow Alex Wang presented his research on Wal-Mart’s impact on metropolitan supermarkets. He benefited from other Fellows’ actionable feedback about the content  during a preview he presented at one of the weekly meetings. He also benefited from the Presidential Fellowship Professional and Academic Development Fund award to support the printing of his his physical poster. With the help of other Fellows and the fund, he received many compliments on GW Research Days about the clarity of content and the visual appeal of the poster.

Although Alex did not end up winning any prizes, he was glad to learn from many brilliant economists that bested him in their research. The opportunity to share work and receive both positive and negative  feedback was both exciting and humbling. Alex highly recommends that the rising second-year and incoming first-year Fellows take part in GW Research Days 2019. As we all know, “more research is needed.”

The Presidential Fellowship Professional and Academic Development Fund supports current Fellows seeking experientially-oriented professional and academic development conference and training opportunities outside the university to complement their academic programs and their GW placement and leadership experiences.  The fund, which has awarded more than $4,000 in grants to 17 current Fellows since its inception in 2013, is made possible entirely through the generous contributions of Presidential Fellowship alumni and friends, and we are grateful for their support.  Learn more and make a gift here.
