At Spring Training we discussed how to effectively manage up. Following the 70/20/10 model, which posits that professional development takes place through 70% personal experiences, 20% learning from others, and 10% direct education, the training included a brief presentation, simulations, and small group discussions. The small group discussions, which were based on the True Colors framework, provided a dialogue through which people could reflect on their own experiences and also hear from other fellows.

Characteristics of good managing up include the following.
  • Understanding  your own work style and that of your manager.
  • Being able to manage around those work preferences in such a way promotes direct communication.
  • Treating your boss and team like clients through proactive problem-solving and communication.
  • Learning how to ask the right questions at the right time.

Some related skills include communication, cultural agility, understanding others, negotiating, and self-knowledge. While learning your boss’s work preferences will take time, GW’s Learn Now guide provides helpful tips and resources, including a series of questions you can use to clarify their work style.
