On Saturday, March 28th, C-Suite executives from various companies and industries inspired young professionals at the sixth annual GW Women in Business Conference. With the theme “Be Bold, Be You,” the student-run event gave the next generation of conscientious leaders the tools to grow and make a difference in the world through meaningful, powerful careers. It was a pleasure to have Julie Monaco, Global Head of Public Sector Corporate and Investment Banking division at Citi (and GW alumna), speak about the bold moves she has made in her career. After graduating from the Elliott School, Ms. Monaco made her first bold move by going into a career in banking rather than a Foreign Service career with the state department.
Ms. Monaco resonated with other keynote speakers throughout the conference that the journey to the C-Suite requires hard work. During a Q&A session, Ms. Monaco was asked what it’s like being a woman in a man’s world. She answered, “When you walk through the door, you are not a woman, you are a banker.” The most recent bold move she made was 18 months ago to head the Public Sector business in the corporate investment bank at Citi.
Editor’s Note: Shirley will join Julie Monaco’s Public Sector Group team at Citi upon graduation, giving her more of a personal connection to Julie’s participation in the GWWIB Conference.
